The Long Drive Lakeland to Cooktown, Enddeavour Falls and south of Wujal Wujal

Sept 11
The day started well, off to Cooktown, went in the information center not at all helpful, (where do you want to go) I had a look around Cooktown not much to see the beach was very good.

Cooktown

I drove up to Endeavour Falls I was going to stay the night there but generally I did not think it was all that interesting, the site was pleasant enough but when you had seen the falls that was that.

So I made my way towards Cape Tribulation on the coast road, I did not quite make it. Stopping to take photos I passed some very beautiful places. Most of the roads were dirt tracks .I got down to Wujal Wujal an Aborigine town with no sign post and many road’s leading off and going through a load of Aboriginal house’s. My satnav kept telling me to make a U turn I had already taken a wrong turn down to another road, incidentally all the road’s are dirt tracks and no sign post’s. I passed a Police Station and stopped to make sure of the way.

I drove on and tried to get up a hill, help Plod was too weak so I had to back down and try again in low gear,  low 4/4 first gear and in first I made it, gosh that was a relief. This road was very steep and windy and up and down, one part was concrete thank goodness otherwise I reckon I would’t of made it. Time was getting on it will be dark soon. I saw three 4/4 parked up so I stopped and made camp at 6.30. A knock on the door would I like to join them by the camp fire a group of very pleasant young students. I declined as I had to write up my Blog and that takes me much effort.  Downloaded my Photo’s as I thought and deleted them from my camera unfortunately I did not check if they were all on my computer so I lost 20 good ones so that made me mad. I really must lean to read thing’s properly before I jump in the deep end. So that was a disaster as far as I am concerned. The Knock on the door was great but that caused my photo’s to disappear. The young travellers are really very pleasant, I joined them later.

I was very fortunate to be with them for that night.

Sep 12
I was up at the crack of dawn the students were still in there tents. I wanted to leave early as I was very concerned about getting to Cape Tribulation, another 25 km to do and if I got stuck the young party of students would sure to pull me up the very steep hills or give me a push in the their 4/4 cars. Well, I did make it and only just, I have never seen such steep hill’s, as well as long steep hills. I must admit I was very glad to get out of that environment and back in to civilisation. Wujal Wujal  gave me the creeps. I was pleased I had done it and what an experience, some times my heart was in my mouth.

This is a good bit of the road.
